Paul Smith No.9 Albemarle Street Furniture Shop

THE STORY OF NO.9

The first Paul Smith shop on Albemarle Street did not sell clothes.

Opened in 2005, No. 9 Albemarle Street was originally a place for Paul to share his passion for design by showing and selling unique furniture, objects and artworks that he collected on his travels around the world.

When the shop expanded to become the London flagship in 2013, Paul’s desire to celebrate creative design remained. The newly expanded shop was conceived as an eclectic and ever-changing space where shirts and sculpture would be shown side-by-side. The basement was developed into a flexible gallery space to host special events and exhibitions. To date it has housed special exhibitions by David Bailey, R.E.M. and Derek Ridgers - to name only a few.

JOHANNES ANDERSEN

Designed in the 1950s by Johannes Andersen for the Danish company CFC Silkeborg, this ‘Capri’ coffee table is crafted from teak, which has been formed into a refined demi-lune shape.

Born in 1903, Andersen initially trained as a cabinetmaker before founding his own architectural workshop in the mid-1930s. He specialised in sleek tables and chairs crafted from rosewood and teak, of which this coffee table is an excellent example.

BUTE FABRICS

Bute Fabrics opened its doors in 1947 when the 5th Marquess of Bute founded a fabric mill to provide work for servicemen returning from World War II. Today, the mill, which is located on the Isle of Bute, is a world leader in textiles and collaborates with leading interior designers, architects and furniture manufacturers.

No. 9 Albemarle Street is home to a number of special pieces of furniture that have been re-upholstered in fantastic Bute Fabrics: a 1950s American scallop-back sofa has been reworked in a textured boucle wool; a pair of angular Italian armchairs are updated with a copper coloured wool satin material; and a striking pair of small armchairs have been given new life with a rich blue crepe wool fabric.
